The UK government has taken a major step towards addressing the issue of high energy bills for households by introducing the Great British Insulation Scheme.
This £1 billion initiative is expected to benefit more than 300,000 families.
Launched on September 14th, 2023, the scheme aims to provide support to those who require affordable heating solutions and improved energy efficiency for their homes. This initiative is set to make a significant impact on reducing the burden of soaring energy costs for eligible households.

The £1 billion Great British Insulation Scheme is now accepting applications, and it has the potential to save eligible homeowners an average of £400 per year on their energy bills.

Who is eligible for the Great British Insulation Scheme?
The scheme is primarily targeted at two main groups of individuals:
- Those residing in homes with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D-G and within council tax bands A-D in England, and A-E in Scotland and Wales. Different UK countries may have different allowances for different products. Please check carefully to make sure you do/don’t apply
- Householders who receive qualifying benefits and live in homes with an EPC rating of D or below.
To determine if you might be eligible for the scheme, you can check your council tax band and verify the EPC rating of your home.
Apply for support from the Great British Insulation Scheme
You may be able to get free or cheaper insulation to reduce your home’s energy bills.
You might get support if your home:
- has an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G – check your EPC
- is in Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland or Wales – check your Council Tax band
You can be a homeowner, landlord or tenant (either renting privately or from a housing association). If you’re a tenant, speak to your landlord before you apply. You’ll need their permission before any insulation can be installed.
Home insulation you can get
You may be able to get support to install:
- cavity wall insulation
- solid wall insulation (internal or external)
- loft insulation
- flat or pitched roof insulation
- underfloor insulation
- solid floor insulation
- park home insulation
- room-in-roof insulation
Check if you can get support
You’ll need:
- the total household income
- the type of benefits anyone living in the property receives – you may be eligible for additional support
- your email address or phone number so your energy supplier can contact you if you’re eligible
What happens next
If you’re eligible for support, your energy supplier will contact you.
They’ll arrange an assessment of the property.
If you need to pay anything, you’ll find out after the assessment.
You can decide not to go ahead if you do not agree with the assessment or costs.
